Re: backspace is delete from *nix console terminal

i'm not sure if or how to change it but i'm in from a console ssh session... the new unicode stuff looks great...
the problem is when i try to backspace while writing messages... when i'm at the end of the line, backspace works as expected but when i'm in the middle of a line, backspace removes the current character and pulls the others on the right back one... i'm using deuce's editor but not sure if that matters...
i know in some terminals, putty for example, there's a setting for backspace is delete or backspace is backspace... i use midnight commander a lot and there's a similar setting in it for the same reason...
i just don't know how or where to fix it if i can... not sure if it should be done on my ssh client side or in the BBS... i've not tested telnet yet but i expect it will be the same...
backcpace is backspace on my command line, though... and delete is delete... using the actual CTRL-H works as expected in this terminal mode...
Synchronet has a (newish) user setting to swap the backspace/delete keys for just this purpose. The unfortunate thing is if you login from a different terminal/program, it won't automatically switch back. I'm actually re-working how this option is toggled in the user defaults menu right now.
